Licensing Agreement FAQ’s
GENERAL
Do I have to submit my entire catalog?
No, we have an option in the licensing agreement form to include, or exclude releases - choose whichever option is easiest for you.
Is the YogiTunes Licensing Agreement exclusive?
No, it is non-exclusive and won’t conflict with any other agreements you have signed.
How do I obtain ISRC/UPC codes for my music?
If you choose to have your music distributed onto major music services (using TuneCore, DistroKid, etc.) then you can choose the option for those distributors to create ISRC/UPC codes for you. If you want to do it independently goto: https://www.isrc.com/ (for ISRC) and https://www.gs1us.org/ (for UPC)
How does payment work?
YogiTunes is a monthly subscription platform. Each month we record the total number of plays of all songs on our platform by all subscribers. We then take 23% (artist share) of total gross amount of subscription revenue and divide it evenly between the total number of songs played to generate a ‘per-play’ royalty rate. This is on average around the $0.10 mark but it fluctuates based on total plays and gross revenue.
We pay royalties to artists who earn more than $25. If royalties owed are under $25 then that total rolls over to the next quarter and accumulates until it’s over our payment threshold.
Most artists earn between $15-150 per quarter depending on how much music they have in our catalog, and how popular it is. Note that our revenue grew from $3500/month to $14,000/month CAD in the past 2 years. So if we continue to grow, then what artists earn will also increase.
Where does the other 77% of our Gross Revenue go?
Running a technology company is intensely expensive. We pay an in-house developer $3,500 per month just to keep our streaming apps up and running, and then usually invest anywhere between $10,000 to 100,000 per year in software development to be able to compete with the big streaming services like Spotify.
From there, YogiTunes has a 5 person team to run operations, customer service, content management + artist relations, licensing, sales/marketing and technology.
Our CEO currently works for $1,000 CAD per month which boils down to around $30/hr and the rest of the team works around this rate (somewhere between $22-30/hr)
Additionally, the cost of running our servers + technology stack eats up the rest of our monthly budget down to the penny!
How many subscribers to we currently have?
We have approximately 500-600 monthly subscribers that earn us a total of around $14,000 CAD per month. Of that number, approximately 100 are studios, with roughly 1,500 teachers under them using sub-accounts (staff of studios who subscribe to us each get their own account included in the monthly price) When we hit 5,000 monthly subscribers the amount of revenue we share with artists increases to 30%.
PUBLISHING/SONGWRITER:
What does the term ‘publishing’ refer to?
Publishing refers to the intellectual property of artists. It is broken up into 50% for the SongWriter, and 50% for the Publisher. As an independent artist, you can be both.
What is a Performing Rights Organization?
All songwriters have the option to register their songs with a Performing Rights Organization “PRO” that is specific to their country. As an independent artist you can register as a Publisher with your PRO, and as a SongWriter, which entitles you to 100% of any royalties generated from your music being played in places of business (yoga studios, restaurants, bars, etc.), terrestrial radio, concert halls, on major tours, etc.
*Please note, if you have chosen to publish your music with CD Baby, or any kind of large publishing clearing house we will not be able to sign a licensing agreement with you. Usually we only deal with artists who are their own publishers or have close ties with their publishing company. If you would like to proceed with us, you can terminate your publishing agreement with CD Baby and register as a Publisher with your PRO. Then we can most definitely work with you!
Why does YogiTunes need my publishing rights and information?
Because we grant a ‘Public Performance License’ for places of business (yoga studios, massage clinics), and a ‘Sync’ license for videos posted to the internet. For both of these kinds of licenses, music publishing rights are required to be included. 5% additional gross revenue (shared pro-rata) is paid to the SongWriter/Publisher for the public use of their music.
Will granting my publishing rights affect my agreements with my PRO (ie, ASCAP, APRA, SOCAN, etc)?
No, your licensing agreement with us for your publishing rights is non-exclusive and doesn’t complete with the agreement you have with your PRO
